Well it seems someone tried to force their way into the server and set off the watchdog, which in it's rush to hide pulled the power cord out.

No we did have someone try to get in but the intrusion protection system kicked in and stopped all outside access to protect your data, well what little we keep of it.

For Sale: American Journal of Science 1848-1899 inc

Sun 18th Jun '17

Advert ID: 30066

Books/Magazines

Details:
A nearly complete run of the American Journal of Science by Silliman. Do a search for the volume indexes, also seem to be able to download all the contents as well, for nothing!

This is scientific publication, the oldest still running in the USA. It concentrates very heavily on minerology but there are many other articles.

Articles by Bell, Michelson & Morley and similar, subjects from hot air engines, Ericsson, singing flames etc. Not really anything about steam engines or civil engineering. A significant fraction of the minerology is of course fossils, this was the great discovery of dinosaurs.

Expect to see about 10% really interesting articles, 10% not so, rest is boring.

I was going to rip them to pieces for the articles, but seemed a waste. Most of the volumes are half leather and still well bound, not dropping to pieces at all. There are seven odd volumes that I bought to finish the run, these are in poor condition, contents fine.

Run goes from vol 55 to 158, two vols per year, each volume has three bi-monthly issues.

Vols missing are 123, 131, 132, 133, 140, 143, 144, 151 and 152.

Search for the AJS and come up with some interesting prices! The complete run, 90 odd volumes, £1000.

They occupy four full book shelves so collection is sensible, will post, guess mainland UK at about £30.

For Sale: Mechanics Magazine 1823 to 1854

Fri 2nd Jun '17

Advert ID: 29963

Books/Magazines
See all ads from Bob Worsley
Details:
This is a bound collection of the classic Mechanic's Magazine by Robertson dating from 1823, issue 1, to 1854.

When bought they were described as complete. Unfortunately this isn't so, and by the time I realised the book seller had ceased trading.

Missing are - vols 14, 50 and 55. Missing issues are - V9 236-9, V23 608-11, V26 708-12, V28 743-6, V31 817-20, V32 865-8, V49 odd pages.

There are 60 volumes bound as 55. It was a weekly paper each of 12 pages, 24 sides. Each is a snapshot of what was happening that week. This means that most is just boring or of little interest, but the in fill bits are fascinating. They are illustrated with a few wood cuts. Note these are not a small copy or Engineering, much earlier, and for a much lower skelled readership.

The bindings are universally in awful condition, every cover is loose, some are missing. The text blocks are very good, easily readable, just the dust from the disintegrating leather that irritates.

These are postable, probably take two boxes. Ask if interested so I can get a quote, guess about £25 mainland UK.

These are surprisingly rare, and as a long run just about invisible. I snapped at the chance when I saw them, would have been better is the seller had been honest. Only seems to be two odd copies on ABE, £90 a pop sounds a lot though. There is a place in India doing scans if you want them.

There are also one or two odd copies, no point in me keeping them.

For Sale: Bound volumes of Engineering 1885 to 1910

Wed 24th May '17

Advert ID: 29891

Books/Magazines
See all ads from Bob Worsley
Details:
This is a complete run of the Engineering periodical from 1885 to 1910 inclusive. Weekly, and bound 6 months to a volume so 52 volumes.

Each volume is about 644 pages plus the added in indicies when bound. Each volume weighs about 3.8kg.

They are complete as far as I know, no missing pages noted when I read through them.

Includes lots of writing about that particular week, mostly unimportant unless you want to know what the imports were or reports from various societies. Of more interest are the general articles and the many illustrations, each week usually includes a large, double page, engraving.

My storage fire safe is being taken so these have to go. Note that collection is essential, near Grantham off the A1, due to weight.
